DIY vs. Pro-Made Bed Platforms – Why It Matters
DIY is great—until you realize how much time, effort, and equipment it really takes to build something that looks clean, fits right, and holds up on the road.
At Shahan Campers, we’ve already gone through the trial-and-error phase (more than once). Curating a design that fits well and functions properly in different SUVs means hours of testing, measuring, adjusting, and remaking. A good platform isn't just a sheet of plywood—it’s a mix of smart design, safe construction, and materials that work together.
Many of the features we offer—like multi-layer polyurethane finishes or no-tool installation—aren’t quick or easy to DIY. For example, applying multiple coats of stain requires hours of drying time, sanding between coats, and coverage on every edge, hole, and surface. Doing that right takes space, patience, and experience—not to mention a dust-free setup and protective gear.
And that’s just the finish. If you don’t have access to the right tools—like a table saw, router, or welder—then fitting the pieces together safely and cleanly becomes a challenge. Even little things like lining up holes or making sure drawers slide smoothly can eat up days, especially when you factor in the complexity of mixing wood and metal. Each material has its own needs—different tools, different techniques, and different rules. Getting them to work together cleanly and securely isn’t just craftsmanship—it’s experience.
So, can you build your own? Sure.
Will it be faster, safer, and more durable to get one from us? Absolutely.
